Brief Nissan History:
Nissan, the Japanese auto maker is what some people call the third of the Japanese big three that consists of Toyota, Honda and Nissan. The “Big Three” is a term from years gone past when GM, Ford and Chrysler were the major forces to be reckoned with. Nissan builds a full line of vehicles that run the gambit from economy cars to full size pick-ups.
Nissan got its start in 1933 when Jidosha Seico Co, Ltd merged with another Japanese manufacturer that formed the Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. Some of you older readers may remember the Datsun name which was the name of the vehicles that Nissan produced. After World War II Nissan formed a partnership with the Austin Motor Co. from the U.K. and started shipping Datsuns to the U.S. in 1958.

Datsun 240Z
Then in the 1960s Nissan merged with the Prince Motor Company and then started building automobiles that were tailored for the U.S. market with the first model being the Datsun 510. Nissan or Datsun at that time had built and exported over one million vehicles by the end of the 60s. The 1970s is when the Datsun name became a popular brand with the launch of the Datsun 240Z sports car and by the end of the 70s the Nissan Motor Company had exported more than 10 million vehicles during that decade.
The Nissan Motor Company decide to drop the Datsun name in 1981 and use the Nissan name from then forward and started producing vehicles in Tennessee during the 1980s. The 1990s was a turbulent decade for Nissan, they having success with several models in the first part of the decade that included cars like the 300ZX, Sentra and Maxima, but then in the latter part of the decade the stars were starting to flicker.
Nissan came back strong with redesigned models that included the Altima and Sentra while introducing new models like the Armada and Titan. In 1999 Nissan and the European automaker Renault formed an alliance that strengthened the company. Today Nissan is continuing to make grow and expand their reputation for building quality automobiles.
Nissan Car Reviews
Just My Opinion by A Regular Car Guy: Nissan Car Review – I think Nissan makes a fine automobile and they remind me a bit of Toyota years ago. The big difference I see is that it seems that Nissan is paying a little more attention to what the car buyer today is looking for in a vehicle. I think they are starting to turn the heads of some of the Japanese car buyers by offering a little more luxury and styling. I am hearing more Nissan owners talk about their second and third Nissan vehicles and the brand loyalty is starting to build. This is what I meant about reminding me of Toyota years ago.
I think Nissan will continue to grow as long as they stay on their current path and become an automaker that Honda and Toyota should be watching closely. One the ways that I judge an auto manufacturer is based on the demand for their used vehicles and used Nissan’s are holding their value while attracting the used car buyer.
